Cylinder heads / overheating
« on: 24 July 2009, 18:35:10 »

Well the garage stripped the heads off although I only wanted one doing and yes the gaskets on both had gone even though the car was still pulling fine before overheating that is . the price for the job is circa £700.00  , is this an ok price? All I know is theres a new pulley set going on as well as belts etc and various other gaskets. I must admit the bores where looking tidy for 121.000 miles. I'd originally  had a new oil cooler fitted but seems the old one added to the h/c going so advise to get one sorted asap when your cooler starts playing up. Lessons to be learned I think.

It's more than I'd want to pay but - in fairness - with the amount of labour involved it doesn't seem un-reasonable, if you get a good job done....

About 250 quids worth of bits.

I struggle to see how the 2.6/3.2 head gaskets can fail if cooked......I can see how the heads could warp though.

The parts are around the 300 mark and the rest is labour and looking at what the garage took off , I'm not surprised at the price. The garage showed the old c/h gaskets and where they had failed in places besides the brown gunk from the cooler failing around gaskets.
