Misfire on initial startup
« on: 21 July 2009, 18:37:50 »

Hi, I have a small and very wierd fault.  Often when I start the engine from cold it runs fine for about 10-15 seconds and then it 'hunts' and runs up to 1000rpm or just over trying to stop itself stalling.  It doesn't stall. It then runs absolutely fine for the journey, no restart required.  I tend to cover 100ish miles at a go up the motorway.
I just did the pedal trick and got 0300 and 0306, that suggests randon multicylinder misfire and cylinder 6 misfire.
So here are my thoughts, cam sensor or trapped / chaffed sensor wire.  Am I warm?

I should mention that I recently had an LPG conversion and the guys that did it also failed to properly connect injector 6 - I have since done that and I have a code 0206 remaining in the ECU as well that I am not bothered by.

The bizarre thing is that it doesn't misbehave when hot or on a restart, just when cold.

I am about to start pulling the plenum off and having a look, is there anything I should be looking for and I have never looked for the cam sensor, I take it it will be at the back of one of the camboxes?

All suggestions gratefully received.

Many Thanks

Paul

Yes it is on cold starts on petrol only.  Seems to have stopped doing it now as well.  Has been fine for the last week, but I have suspicions about the air leak as I am sure it didn't make as much 'sucking' noise prioir to having the LPG conversion done.  Have checked everything lately and all looks well, but have decided to bit the bullet and pull the plenum and manifold out and replace all of the seals and check everything whilst I am there, new plugs time too, so a small birthday for the top end!

I have checked all of the new pipework on the LPG system (airside - has MAP sensor and connection to the evporator - BRC system) and they are not leaking, so I am fairly happy that it is probably deeper and underneath the plenum. I suspect that the fitter has either squashed a seal out of shape or rolled an edge on one or something, or just plain not tightened something up, and I am just lucky that it is not a problem at the moment.

Sorry it took so long to reply, been away for a week.

Thanks

if its an lpga install should take it back really, esp if there is any warranty involved. But whatever, suspect will need to check down to the injectors and associated manifold. Also wonder if it worth checking the black plastic inlet to block below that as well, just to be sure? Seals to block should be ok at that age, but while your there....?
Sounds like your on the right track anyway imho. :-)
