Is the s off on the dash display and have you check fluid level?

sports is off on the dash. just looking through the service history it done 127000 miles full service up to 104000 nothing about the gearbox fluid got my new timing belt on order so wouldn't hurt to do the fluid at the same time :y

Think I'm right in saying the box has an electronic selector switch, so maybe try cleaning the contacts(sure someone will confirm this) :).

Hi, not sure if this is of any help, but on reading up about this gearbox. I found that the kickdown switch is part of the accelerator cable and can play up causing strange symptoms, also read that it can be cleaned.

At any point did you stop the car, turn off the engine, then carry on the journey to see if there was any change.

My car when I 1st got it went into what I believe is limp mode, seemed to pull away in just 3rd gear.

Turning off and restarting reset the gearbox and everything has been fine since.

As others have mentioned, sounds electrical, like a dirty connection.  But oil level needs checking.  has it ever had an oil and filter change.
