Hi all.
just brought a 2.0 CD auto estate (118000 miles) and will be giving the autobox and fluid change.  i see it has two sump pans a large one and a small rectangular one.  i know i will need to drain the fluid by removing the sump pan but do i need to remove both and if not which one will allow me to drain of the most fluid

i would recommend removing both sumps as you will still have old fluid left in the sump of the small one. and its also worth while checking the small sump while your their as this is where the thrust washer ends up when it breaks down.

Make sure when you do this job you are wearing clothes you dont mind throwing away as old ATF doesnt come out of your clothes .

If you buy the gearbox filter and gaskets you get gaskets for the small front sump plus the bigger rear sump.
So yes remove both mate

excellent thanks for all your help. going to check fluid level this weekend but had a look while car was on ramps today and cant see the top up plug/hole anywere

It's on the driver's side of the larger (rear) sump. There's a filler/level plug about 2/3rds of the way up the side of the sump.

With the car level and the engine running check that the fluid is up to the level of the bottom of the plug (chuck fluid in until it pees out).

I use a green plastic potting bench tray to catch all the oil as you move away when you release the sumps. It is about 3ft by 3ft and was £12 years ago from a garden centre but worth its weight in gold, make Robinsons. Easy to clean up after and can be used as a trug for tools, nuts bolts etc so they don't get lost on other jobs. Heck you can even pot up plants in it.
