Omega self levelling suspension query
« on: 22 August 2009, 09:45:17 »

One of my neighbours has a 2.2 DTi Elite (51 reg) whose self levelling suspension doesn't appear to be working. I suspect that the pump is stuffed as it isn't letting the air out (vent chamber full of ally oxide??). I am going to look at the pump for him but I need to know what the set up procedure is for the levelling sensor. Does anyone have any ideas?

It just bolts to the rear off side radius arm James .... that's it!  ;)  ;)  There should be no reason for the need to adjust anything once fitted.

He has had new springs and shocks fitted. He is saying the levelling pumps up a little each time the car is driven but never goes down so consequently ends up looking like a bath chair.

It was my assumption that it is similar to the Lotus Carlton set up where the height is adjustable based in a lock nut on the sensor arm that allows the sensor arm to be moved independantly of the potentiometer.

seem to recall its a solid arm - though dont have elite anymore to check.

certainly the arm is 'bendable' iirc ::)

can't remember if there is a calibration in tech2, don't remember seeing one, but then I have damaged too many brain cells recently  :-[

have posted a guide on raising self levelling in maintenance section if it helps, didnt go into lowering it again in your case and presume you have had to remove the air pipes from the shock to let air out?Mind your arms if it drops onto the springs suddenly? There is no adjustment on the shock or anywhere else on the car other that to bend the wire arm or disconnect as the guide explanes. But tech 2 may have a setting, i dont know. Maybe play with the arm on the drive as guide, very easy, and see if it clears. If not i guess your into the pump itself as you say. I have not had this issue but think your on the right lines imho.

Hi James,

Something that is worth checking is that the wiring harness hasn't rubbed through and is making a bad connection or shorting somewhere. This happened to me once on a car that was only a few months old. The problem turned out to be that someone in Russelsheim had caught one of the cables and that it had rubbed though.

I had something like this with mine - I thought it was the sensor BUT it turned out to be a broken spring that had snapped at the top section - I had them both replaced and it has cured the car looking like a hot rod!

Just make sure that whoever replaced the springs used the correct ones - there is a difference in standard and self levelling - maybe some part numbers on the invoice you can check?

Oh and as a short term fix - just pull the small pipe off the shocker - if you look across the top of the tyre you will see the thin black air pipe going into a spring type connector - it may come off with a "woosh" as the air/pressure is released so be careful that the wheel arch doesn't trap your arm when it lowers - you should then have enough room to clip the pipe back onto the shocker (push fit) and then the car will be resting on the springs not the shockers - you should then hear the compressor kick in if you turn the ignition on (and dont start) and leave for 20 secs.

Cheers for all of the replies. I had the car in the garage today and it measures 64 cm from floor to bumper line.

It turned out to be a severed wire for the deflate valve in the pump. I have now repaired the wire and all is good. He won't be too pleased when I tell him he needs a couple of new rear tyres.
