Injector colour coding
« on: 01 October 2009, 11:18:52 »

Hi all,
I just put the mig through its MOT and despite the fact there is a constant missfire on one cylinder, it passed its emissons test. I have replaced the plugs, leads, DIS pack...everything except the injectors (I will do a compression tests soon just to be on the safe side) and the fact it was well within all the emissions limits and has no petrolly smell from the exhaust makes me think an injector has packed up.
My question is this, if I want to replace them do I have to find ones of the same colour (mine are dark blue) or will any from a similar year of V6 do? :-?

The colour code is not reliable. The part number is what you should check. I would say that you should be pretty safe but it's worth checking - or buy a complete set and swap them all to keep them matched.

Yes I was going to get a whole set anyway as I have no way of identifying which one is faulty. I just wondered if the yellow ones differed in some way to blue/green/red ones ect...
Will check the part number.

I would say if you replace with any complete set from a 2.5 (3.0 may even be the same injector too IIRC?) they will be fine.

Do check the wiring to the injector first. It's not impossible that the plug has popped off it. Might also be worth a continuity check back to the pin on the ECU connector for each injector (positive side of the injector goes back to the feed from the main relay in the box by the battery, negative side goes to the driver in the ECU).

Might be worth checking the coil resistances of each injector (although IIRC it raises a fault if they are open / short). They would typically be around 12 ohms.

You can also verify that they are delivering fuel by priming the fuel rail (by running the fuel pump for a few seconds) and then applying 12 volts to each injector in turn with the plenum removed and watching for fuel vapour down in the inlet port. For goodness' sake do this in open air and keep any electrical connections well away from the fuel vapour that you will generate, though.  :o
