I'll probs invest in a Haynes manual, even though its for the pre-facelift.

Do any of you recommend Autovaux for you parts? They seem reasonable. Do the parts seem to be good quality? Do you think I may be able to get the lock tool from them?

Any recommendations appreciated as I'm not used to Vauxhalls.

I would no longer recommend autovaux - they have a habit of telling you its a genuine part (or a part made by a GM supplier), but its not the same quality as a genuine part.

Although they did supply me some Gen GM rings for the Astra - which were £218 cheaper than the dealer  :-/

Actually guys, I bought the 2.2 DVD and found it very helpful. Granted it isn't ideal, but I had never attempted a job like that before and had no problems whatsoever

Hi, just (yesterday) took delivery of my 02 2.2 auto Omega. It is off the road at present as I'm gonna do a full sevice and renew the timing belt/rollers/water pump etc.

There doesn't seem to be a Haines manual for this engine but one for the earlier 2.0

2 questions: will the 2.0 information in the Haines book do for the 2.2? and better still is there a 'how to' do this job on this forum? Forgive me if I've missed it.

I'm a competent home mechanic but need to know if I need any special tools etc before I start.

is the same think its just the bore size dif,you will need to lock the top and bottom and some star sockets and 13m spanner and socket, and a rubber hammer to get the crank wheel off.

Its a 4 pot, you only lock the top

i had to lock the bottom as it keep'd moving.

WAter pump from same place as belt above, cam lock off ebay - you only need to lock top end on a 4 pot

Most factors will sell a draper lock for around a fiver, though they may have to order it in (as its specific to a range of engines)

Cheers. I've ordered a lock from Laser so ok there. I've been onto eurocarparts and they have the Contitech kit and Vx quality water pumps. I guess Bosch oil filters and plugs are ok? I'll get all my stuff from them and give it a full service too.

yes water pump is a must too, its cambelt driven on 4 pot, and its worth replacing it, £45 odd (or what ever it is now) is cheaper than an engine rebuild if it fails.

Is the water pump for a 2.2 the same as the 2.0?  I ask this because the belt on my 2.2 estate is due for replacement soon and I still have a new pump that was never fitted to my old 2.0 estate (I have been saving it for my wifes 1.8 Vectra but that had the water pump changed just before I bought it).
