V6 missfire
« on: 08 December 2007, 16:16:22 »

Hi guys, my brother in law has a veccy b v6 and last week called me to say that his v6 was running rough and barely had the power to pull away. So off i go and pulled a couple of leads off the plugs and they were full of oil,so advised him that the cam cover gaskets were fuberd. I went to the local dealers where my pal is in parts and got the parts and a full service kit to repair it. When we removed the plenium and assosiated parts  we eventually got the cam covers off and replaced the gaskets. No probs there, cleaned and refitted the breather pipes and everything looked good, then the rain decided to fall with a vengance and soon we were very wet and cold. I removed the plugs on the front bank and heres where the probs started, 2 of the 3 plugs were clearly knackerd with the ceramic insulator broken and only on the plug because the 2 electrodes were stopping it dropping off. We found the same on the rear bank but half of the insulator has gone compleatly.I fitted tne new plugs and refitted all the top end and started the car, it still runs rough and is shaking all over the place, and sounds very tappy. I think that it has jumped a couple of teeth on the timing belt.It was just too wet a to strip the belts and cover off and is now awaiting some decent dry weather to do this.

QUESTION, will the broken ceramic plug core have done any serious damage and will it require heads off to check. Have already got the belt kit and was due to be done asap. :'(

Have you replaced the HT leads? If oil soaked/fried they have probably failed.

HT leads on in the correct order?

I'd say if the plug noses were going to do any damage they already will have. Most likely they just broke up and the bits eventually exited the exhaust valves. It does concern me that it happened in the first place. This can be caused by running lean, so it might be worth checking the fuel delivery is OK. Check the fuel pressure and change the fuel filter if it hasn't been done recently. Could also be clogged injectors and perhaps that explains the misfire if not the rattle. Only way to check them is to remove them and have them flow tested and cleaned, or replace with a set from a known runner.

For peace of mind it might be a good idea to do a compression check just to see if anything is damaged. If the cam belt is due it might as well be done now to rule out a timing issue.

Plug leads appeared to be ok but worth a change i suppose. the rattle is deffo top end and does sound like a valve is being intimate with a piston. There is also the chance that the ceramic has imbedded into the head and or the piston or even jammed a valve open and has bent it. compression test will tell that. first though will be to see if the timing has slipped a couple of teeth. If that is ok then i fear the worst.  Gary. :(

Do the compression test first. No point in doing a belt change if you have bent valves... :(
