Elite 3.2 Buying Advice.
« on: 03 November 2009, 00:56:49 »

As the general opinion here is that the fuel economy on all the V6's is very much the same, I've decided I'm going to look for a 3.2 Elite facelift....heck..why not. (I currently have a  1998 2.5)

Is there anything I should look out for especially, apart from the normal oil leaks and cambelt changes.

just the usual V6 stuff, 3.2's do suffer from pre-cat failure which causes the emmsions? light to come on.

Give the electrical items a good check as they can be expensive - Colour Screen, Sat Nav - Bose speakers, rear blind, sun roof etc.

Sorry to dissapoint, but you will definitely notice a negative difference in fuel consumption when compared with your 2.5. Especially when driving in, let's say, 'A Spirited fashion'. But yes, good fun, so go for it as I did earlier this year. :y :y

I reset the trip on mine just yesterday after 4000 miles of mixed driving including half a holiday down south (Cornwall) on motorways back to home as well as a goodly mix of full load/light load/heavy foot driving.

Got 23.5 so, take the jist from that....   :y

Same as my 2.5 (which is driven as though my granny was in the passenger seat). :(

always worth a pedal test. :-) constant flashing means no codes.

Make sure C.Ds change and play as mentioned, they dont like cd r's and replacement lasers are very hard to find.

Sit on the boot ledge feet on the floor within a minute or 2 of the cars starting and feel for the self levelling rising, should hear the pump in the front drivers wing.

Check exhaust behind back box for rust and holes. If its slash cut will be original design, unless its been replaced before the cheaper design came in, if it is original probably about due to fall off by now depending on mileage and general condition of course.

Should be no warnings on the display. Fluids are easy but head light low field of vision can be 50 sobs minimum to sort out. Check the hid light sensors on the pass side suspension arms are in fair nic and feel solidly mounted esp the ball joint to/in the sensor.

If there are rivets visible in the pads they are the better more expensive oe, cheapo wooden tc pads have no rivets so no anti squeal shims.

Lift the bonnet after the test drive for signs of oil smoke from cam cover gaskets.

No real deal breakers provided the auto box(?) is ok, but the above should help knock him down if need be and the general appearance is ok. Hth
