My wife's Elite is in serius need of an oil change, but the tosser at our local main stealer who last did the service overtightened the bolt in the cap, hence the bolt just spins.

Am I to assume that I can cut the hex head off the bolt and the cap will come off that way, then carry on with the conversion to a screw-on filter?
Also, is the part number for the thread adaptor a VX number?

The hex head is cast into the filter housing cover so not sure how it can spin on its' own.

Get a socket to go on the hex shaped casting on the cover and a strap wrench to hold the body of the housing still if necessary, then unscrew the cap.

Might need a new cap if it's cracked but this system isn't a problem is the cap is not overtightened so I personally wouldn't bother to convert unless the whole housing ends up scrap.

Seen a few of these crack as Muppets over tighten them. I have also used the strap or chain around the housing and still been unable to slacken them

If you think it is that tight and you are worried about breaking it, don't undo it just yet... get yourself to Vauxhall first getting the conversion adaptor for about £15.

It's the whole filter housing that spins - sorry, I thought there was a separate bolt through it!
I doubt using a chain would help, as it would still spin. :-/

It doesn't leak and I've had to change the oil without doing the filter, but once was enough, and it really needs replacing soon!

You put the chain around the housing - the cap is the front bit, that meets with a lip - so you hold the housing steady with the chain while using a socket on the cap. HTH

We haven't gotten round to it yet, and it's gonna cost her!

Unfortunately, on her way to Norfolk (as we speak), the Elite has conked out at a Texaco garage on the A17, guy's been out and said a tappet has stuck or dried or both
It stalled at the roundabout (very unusual) and now sounds like a bag of spanners. Fine up until then though.
It's being taken to Sleaford to drain and refill the oil - they might even be able to do the filter (finger's X'd), and hopefully the tappet's relatively unscathed...........

Anyone in the area, there's a green Elite estate on the A17 somewhere, maybe on a truck, with my missi and daughter feeling a little pee'd off right now! :-/ :-/ :-/

Garage in Sleaford drained the oil, stuck some oil flush in (must say I'm not generally a fan of that stuff!), ran it for half an hour then drained that and filled with 10w40 semi synth. They couldn't get the filter housing off either.
Tappet shut up, so that's lucky - next time I tell her it needs a bloody oil change, she'll listen to me!

Car runs OK now - and the EML has gone out (never did find out why that was on for the last few months!!!) - so I'll do the filter mod and stick in some more fresh oil again next weekend.

Your original metal canister with a separate filter is every bit as good as the spin on throw away type, so long as they're not tighten up to silly lbft. If only whoever changed the filter last time could read the 15Nm cast into the ally housing ......  :-?

Exactly - I think alot of people see summat made from metal - whether it's aluminium, steel, etc - and automatically think it has to be fooking tight.
I just don't get how this one spins without leaking!!!

i had exactly the same problem(whole cannister spinning)managed to separate them with chain and socket,12mm hex bolt holding the cannister to the block,all the tangs on the rear of the cannister had sheared off.converted the filter in 10 minutes once removed.

Managed to get round to doing the conversion today.
This is what was removed....

Even managed to remove it all without any breakage, so if anyone needs them....(also got a new filter and O ring too. )
You can clearly see the "15Nm" stamped in the casting. Obviously, some VX grease monkeys can't!
Old filter was a right mess, didn't think to photograph that though

This is what replaced that lot.....
