Tyre sizes
« on: 15 November 2009, 14:08:12 »

The Omega I've just bought has two 205/65 tyres on the front and two 215/65 on the back. Now I've a suspicion they should all be 195/65!

The two front tyres are bald so I'm thinking of just putting two 215/65's on the front. Would this be ok do you reckon?

Thanks

Omega's never had wider rears I don't think. should be either 195's or 205's on there dependant on size, not that it will matter though  :y

205/65 would be a 15 inch fitment.

If it is a steel wheel then it will only be 6.5 inch wide and to put a 215 on this is well excessive - very 'chubby' and if you put these on the front your steering will become heavier and more vague.

It does have alloy wheels. It looks like the plonker that had it before me (I've only had it a few days) has put different size tyres on the back. The problem is it's the front (which I think are the correct ones) that need changing. As you say though, the back tyres just look to big for the car.

To make matters worse I've just scrapped a Rover with 5 decent 195/65's thinking they were no good for this car. Will teach me to rush around in future!  :-[

If it's got alloys on they will likely be a bit wider rim, so 205's should be ok, or larger. 215's are less popular and usually more expensive and harder to obtain.
The MR2 MK2 has smaller tyres on the front from the factory ( staggered fitment) as do some other cars.

Putting a narrower tyre on the front lightens the steering a little and cuts out some of the 'paddle effect' if you know what I mean, and tramlining to some extent, you can try various options to see what you like best, they're all ok to use as long as the same type of tyre is on each corner, and personally I prefer matching make of tyre all round.

For what its worth Kwik fit list it as 205/65/15, although my 2.6 has 225 all round, but on 16 inch wheels

I noticed that as well  :-?
My 2.6 had 205/50/16 on the front and the correct 225/55/16 on the rear when I had it... the incorrect tyres on the front caused me no end of problems including ABS ont working correctly. Made them the same all round, and all the problems went!  :y

That sounds a bit strange Rockhampton! what were the problems? and how would a size smaller tyre affect the abs?
A number of cars, including ones with abs have staggered tyre fitment as standard.

I'm intrigued!

Well, from my own experience, when the wrong tyres were fitted, if I braked gently at speed, the ABS would always cut in (chattering on the pedal, brakes snatching). Now I've changed the tyres, that no longer happens - in fact, the brakes are really smooth now. In addition, the ABS lamp would come on about twice a week - always went off when I restarted. It has never happened since the tyres were corrected (the ABS does still function as proven by the recent wet weather!). I've posted elsewhere on the forum, and spoken to a decent mechanic (service manager for an established Fiat dealership), and the consensus is that because the rotational diameter of the front tyres was smaller than the rear, the front wheels were spinning faster at any given speed (about 37 extra times a mile) - this would mean that the ABS was always thinking there was something wrong, and trying to correct. If a car has standard staggered fitment, then the ABS will be programmed as such by the manufacturer (e.g. some BMW models, Smart cars etc.) - the Omega is not one of these cars.
A similar situation arises on some other models if there is a large difference in the wear levels between tyres - this can cause the ABS warning to illuminate, or the ABS to cut in when not needed - looking on the Internet, seems to be a particular problem with some Citroens, and I seem to recall the old Cavalier SRi also.
I can only speak from my own experience - as I say, my braking has improved dramatically now! :y
