Omega 1999 2.5 v6-Rocket Cover/Gasket Replacement
« on: 18 November 2009, 11:25:19 »

Hi,

I have read a few times that the Rocker Covers on the Omega (1999 year or similar model) 2.5 v6 Petrol engine can be replaced with the alloy Vectra ones.

Does anyone have the existing Part Numbers for the Omega plastic ones and the Part Numbers required for the alloy vectra ones at all please ?

Also is it a straight forward swap over ?

I am getting a bit sick in having to keep having the plastic omega ones replaced, done 100K since getting the car and its currently in the garage as I type this being done for the 3rd time due to warping. It seems the rocker covers are taking it in turn to fail every 30K miles.

So next time I would like to get an alloy ones fitted and see how it lasts.

Cheers

Not usual for Omega cam covers to warp - usually leaks due to overtigtening of cam cover bolts, use of non Vx gaskets, blocked breathers.

Nothing wrong with the cam covers, the damage is caused by blocked engine breathers.

If you do fit stronger cam covers then the pressure will blow something even more awkward to fix (like crankshaft seals)

I have read that the Vectra covers will fit but that some things are different because the vectra engine is mounted sideways.

Clean (or change) the breather box behind the drivers side cylinder head. If your garage doesn't know it is there then they don't know enough about Omegas to be trusted to work on your car IMHO

Make sure your garage is using genuine Vx gaskets, there are various qualities of pattern ones around, the worst ones go hard in weeks, even the best ones dont seem to last as long as originals.
As said above....check the breathers are working.

I have had Omega's for years and have never had the cam covers warp.

As others have stated, you MUST use genuine Vx gaskets, Vx black gunge, and the correct torque (8nm) settings on the bolts which should be tightened middle outwards, and diagangly.

If your garage cannot get this right, and use genuine parts, then you are wasting your time and money! ::) ::) ;)

No, they are waisting your money  ;D :y

Ok, Vectra cam covers....the facts.

1) They are alloy.....IF warping was an issue then thye may address this.

2) They must be fitted on opposite banks when in rear wheel drive config.

3) Due to 2, this means your oil filler will now be close to the scuttle on the drivers side.

4) Plug leads do not fit as well.

5) If breathers are blocked, the crank seal lets go!

My personal view is that they solve nothing and add nothing.
