I got home from work about 20 years go in my Vauxhall Chevette and had to stop to move the dustbins that had been left on the pavement in front of my driveway. Engine idling happily, like a well oiled sewing machine, I went to get back in and found that the mushroom had dropped and locked the door.

After about 15 minutes the neighbours started popping out to see why I was blocking the road & I was shown how to unlock the door with a piece of plastic strip.

After that I got into the habit of carrying bits of plastic strapping around and winding the window down before getting out to move the dustbins.

Hi all - funny how we have or know someone who's also done this - me included. I don't know if this is applicable still on other Vx models - but I did the keys in the boot trick with an Astra (P reg - 1990 something).
Called the RAC and he performed some magic under the front of the car that managed to activate the ignition circuit which allowed him to then slide a slim thingy through the door seal to lower the front window ... he wouldn't actually tell me what he connected to what but it did the trick. I realise the door frame round a miggy window might make that impossible to achieve - but might open up other options ??
Needless to say touchwood you tend to only do this once.. :P

Cheers
