TD Lift pump swop. Advice needed please.
« on: 30 November 2009, 16:51:12 »

I have had a couple of hours in a very windy drive, attempting to change my lift pump. The Guide is brilliant (Nice one Platty) but when I looked at my pump, I saw that the white nylon fitting was adrift, (I assume the flow of Diesel is upwards into this fitting). This presumably is why I have had to keep the tank above half. On the other end of this fitting, there is a black plastic clip, which I can't seem to undo. I will attempt to upload a pic of the view I have when looking into the tank, note the loose fitting. I have since tested my pump and it works perfectly (Typical).

I have cleaned my filter before, so I assume the fitting coming adrft is my fault. Does anyone remember a sequence of putting this lot back together?  I don't want to let the pipe come loose again.

that white bit should be attached to the lid of the pump
the black clip your on about is it still attached to the side of the pot if so you need to squeeze the 2 small bits that stick out in with one hand and use a long srewdriver to gently leaver it off. its a pure sh*&e to get off.
if you want to take the whole lot out (white bits) you need small hands and about 40 fingers ;D because there's 4 clips you need to pull back on the bottom of the tank these clips lock back on again should you let go it took me about 2 hours to get it off :y
you can't remove the sender unit until the white pot is removed its the hoop bit on the n/s it just pulls up to realese

Thanks Damage, I have taken my old pump out, and can fit the new one, then connect the white bit. I just fancied disconnecting the black clip, to minimise damage so to speak.

Glen, look carefully, and you'll see that the black plastic clip has a serrated straight edge to it.
Press this edge forwards with your thumb, and the white elbow/transfer pipe will release. To refit, press the clip, then offer-up the pipe elbow. Then release the thumb pressure, and the elbow will be relocated.
Had the same hassle with my previous tractor mate.

OK Mate, thanks for that. I am having trouble seeing the clip, never mind the serrations. As for the pipe elbow, is it just a push fit? there seems to be a fair bit of plastic at the end, as if it is some sort of bayonet fitting.

Yep Glen, use your thumb to push the clip.
Then carefully push-fit the bayonet-type pipe-connector (and it's integral transfer pipe) onto the T-piece at the top of the pump. Release the thumb pressure, and you should find that the clip securely attaches the transfer pipe elbow to the T-piece.

OK Gents, thanks for the help. I Chickened out of removing the clip, because it would be brittle (Very cold here) I just fitted the white nylon fitting back on, it seems secure but is not locked as such. Engine running now with only one Gallon in the tank. Job sorted. I will fill the tank to the brim to make sure the seal is not leaking. Once again, thanks for the assistance.
 :y
p.s. My filter was clean on the outside, but there was some crud on the inside!  ::)

EDIT - Leak from manhole, have tightened it, will see if it has done any good. :(
