mix white vinigar with some water,  teaspoon of viniga to full bottle of water put in spary bottle, also good for cleaning windows. :y

How does that mixture help to check for air leaks round vac pipes? :-? :-? :-/
try it see what happens.

Did the carb spray test - no noticeable change in engine noises. Then I took off the MAF sensor connector and sprayed some WD40 in it and reconnected (a suggestion from another forum) A short test run and no warning light or cut-outs, but I'm expecting it to come back.
From reading online, a possible culprit is the little breather holes in the throttle body - I've never had it off, although I've cleaned it and done the various breather hoses and pipes, and done the cam cover/crankcase breather recently. Is this a good place to look next? I'll report again after a decent run.

50 miles + and no cutting out - town & country roads, 0 - 80mph. This seems too good to be true...

the little breather holes in the throttle body
With clean breathers & at idle, the throttle butterflies are closed and the air into the engine should go through the IAC (idle air control valve).

Fumes from the crankcase should be sucked out of the little holes on the engine side of the butterflies. Oily mist from the crankases goes straight into the manifold.

When the little holes get blocked the crankcase fumes & oily mist come out of the larger pipes before the butterflies. Some of this muck builds up on the butterflies and in the throttle bodies to give a sticky throttle but most of it goes through the IAC which cakes up in the IAC to give symptoms of poor idling and random stalling & fast idle.

Clean the holes on the throttle bodies and the IAC. Use lots of carb cleaner in the IAC but don't poke anything into it, it is fragile inside.
