leaking gasket
« on: 13 December 2009, 23:05:11 »

I have a leak, took the 2.6 V6 Y plate to the garage and was advised that my gasket was leaking, and that it would get progressively worse over time.  He quoted me 450 notes to replace the gasket, is that reasonable?

thanks

Yes, its a slow leak, theres a small stain in the ground some where between the back and the middle of the engine.  Mechanic advised they have identified source of leak via a flexi camera.

ta - is 450 notes for a new gasket reasonable?  Are there any other symptoms I should be looking out for?

It sounds like the sort of price a garage may charge imo,if it is confirmed as head gasket it may be worth dropping a PM to Darth Loo Knee,he is a travelling Omega mechanic, and I would imagine he would charge less than that . :-/

coolent leak, usually hbv but could be a few other causes. Not the first and wont be the last to pronounce firmly and confidently, Head gasket! Then the owner comes on here for advice, changes the hbv for £35 and all is well. You can then drive round to you mechanic and tell him where to stick his flexi camera!

Not seen you problem first hand but chances are hbv. Well covered on here, guide in maintenance (i think?)

Hi , can you give  a more  up-dated account.
Are you loosing coolant ? Is it in any waybeen running hot?
Maybe you can check the HBV .
Can be sorted/DIY for under £40.  Check out the cooling system and post the findings. HTH :y

Yep,I think a more detailed explanation of the problem would definetely help. :y
Is the stain coolant, oil ? middle of the engine was what made me think of oil cooler plate rather than HBV,but if you could try to pinpoint it a bit more precisely,it could help in diagnosis. :y

If I were you I would first check the Heater Bypass Valve cos that is the usual culprit and it leaks and drops coolant just where you say it is doing.
They told me Head Gasket too but after £30.00 quid and a bit of my own time it wasw cured.
No way I would pay £450 quid so they could 'talk the talk' and get easy money.
Plenty of guidance in the Maitenance section to show you how.
