I would suggest that the misfire has caused unburnt fuel to be let into the cats, which has therefore produced the rotten egg (sulphur dioxide) smell. The misfire has caused the cats to do this not the other way around.

Solve the misfire and then see if the cats still stink.

Try an Italian tune up having cured the misfire (drive it hard in lower gears to get the cats really hot to clean the reactive sites on the catalyst honeycomb surface, hopefully to restore efficiency)  If this fails try some cataclean (recommended by others on here, not tried it myself though)

If this fails the misfire has fubared your cats, :( :(

check though before replacement by going to your friendly MOT station and getting the emissions checked. If it is okay why replace? ;D ;D

Expensive at all times of the year. Just what you dont need at this time of year tho'.  :'( :'(

your right there goes my Xmas money lol i do know that it has a slightly leaky rocker gasket  which i presume like most has flooeded the wells on the driver side worth me giving them a clean out

also im sure if the cat went the EML light would come on?

Leaky rocker cover gaskets would certainly give you a misfire eventually as the oil breaks down the insulation rubber on the spark plugs leads. The microscopic particles of metal in the oil will also act as a conductor thereby shorting the spark to earth in the well rather than igniting the fuel air mixture!!!!!!!

This also places an undue load on the coils or dis pack and they then break down, costing you even more money :-[ :-[ :-[

Plan of action would be, if it were my car
Sort the rocker cover out, replace with genuine
New plugs
New leads / coil pack

Then clear down any stored codes in the ECU, via Tech 2 (if Vx) or similar generic code reader/ resetter a number are available either to buy or someone close by to you on the forum may be able to help.

Take it for an Italian tune up, use super unleaded, as it burns better, for a couple of tanks.

See if any codes stored does the cat still stink. If not you've got away with it.

If rotten eggs prevail, read any codes (you're correct a failed cat should through throw up a stored code) if no codes take to MOT station to get emissions test to see if it passes. If codes are present then resolve the codes by replacing the relevant parts.

HTH, Good luck

Although the OOF shop has sold out the price is £64

See here for the V6
http://shop.omegaowners.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=10

It gives you the part numbers so you will be ahead of the dealer.

Do both sides and more importantly clear out the breather system, see the how to below:

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152598350

There is a guide on the how to for changing the rocker gaskets on a V6 see the how to below:

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152564281

Good luck and hope the cats aren't fubared.

 :) :) :) :)
