Message normally appears about halfway down dipstick, and most engines are 1l from min to max on dipstick, thus 0.5l as MDTM says.

Obviously, just fill it to the max mark on dipstick, no more :y

And the engine needs to be near operating temp while checking the oil level?

No. Just needs to have been stopped for a few minutes to allow any oil in the galleries etc to drain back to sump ..... on level ground  :y

Oh blast, I just topped up with a litre, even though the dipstick suggested I was covered. My 'check oil level' warning had been on for a few days though. Should I be OK?
