What engine work to do and in which order?
« on: 04 February 2010, 22:06:45 »

I've come to the conclusion that the cam cover gaskets are leaking as the breathers are gummed up.  As the temp gauge doesn't rise above 75 degrees the stat's on the list too.

The cambelt will be due shortly, and I'm aware that it's worth doing the water pump at the same time.

So in terms of saving time and effort is it worth doing any of the above work either at the same time or in a particular order?

On your lump I'd do it all at once - as the plenum has to come off for each job....

Edit... darn - she's logged in again...  ::)

Agreed. And if tyou do the cam covers without sorting the breathers they will fail again. May as well do it in one hit.

Believe me, you will save yourself a lot of time and effort (and skin) if you do the lot at once. As already stated the plenum has to come off each time anyway and I would remove the scuttle and battery too for good measure.
My Tip! Just hook up a spare battery  like a jump start to the cables first and you will not lose any settings. I made up a one using insulated crocodile clips and a bit of heavyish flexy cable. Works like a dream but remember not to try to start it or you will fry the cables.
Remember to use GM/VX Cam Cover seals or take the almost certain risk of more leaks very soon from the aftermarket rubbish clone sets.
GudLuk and fine weather!

Thanks for the replies.  In terms of parts costs I guess I will need the cambelt kit, water pump, oil cooler and cam cover gaskets.

Are the water pump and oil cooler available on TC at reasonable prices or am I better off looking elsewhere?  Obviously I've read enough on here to use genuine Vx gaskets and cambelt kit.

I wouldn't do the oil cooler as a matter of course on a 2002 car. I don't recall hearing of very many failures on cars of that vintage at all.
