Heater not working:Tried everything?
« on: 20 February 2010, 15:50:16 »

I have no heat at all coming from climate control/heater, I have flushed matrix and checked for air lock, both in and out matrix pipes get hot, replaced heater bypass valve, replaced heater control panel. Heater flaps appear to be moving, either way it is cold air both sides front and back. I have come to the point of no futher ideas, any help gratefully received.

Try disconnecting both heater pipes at the bulkhead, then attach  a length of tube tube to one and blow down it. Can you feel resistance?

I found flushing with a garden hose appears to show flow but, the pressure is much higher than the coolant circulating pump. It didn't take much of an obstruction in the matrix to prevent coolant flow.

I did it the hard way by changing the matrix Afterwards with the core removed I tried blowing and felt resistance. With nothing to lose I put a compressed air line on the old core and blew out some plastic junk.

It might just be worth trying compressed air if all else has failed, but only with both sides of the matrix disconnected from the sytem.

Forgot to mention, the way I identified lack of coolant flow was by installing a length of clear plastic tube in the heater input circuit, you could see bubbles not moving very fast and the pipe expanded.

Mike, that sounds like a truly excellent idea.  :y

And yes, it is easy to be fooled that you have good flow through the matrix when flushing, because of the parallel pipes within it.  Only a few of these may be flowing, the others clogged.
BTW, were the plastic bits that came out when you airlined your old matrix sort of spiral shaped?
Each of the 12? small pipes within the matrix has a plastic spiral feature up its centre.  I guess this is to improve the heat-transfer to the metal pipework by forcing all the flow away from the centre of each pipe.

It was about two years ago so memory is a bit hazy, I thing they were flat scraps of plastic.
I think I would have remembered spirals, I do wish I'd kept the old unit now.
