Changing radiator
« on: 08 March 2010, 10:23:49 »

Hi,

I'm going to have a go at changing my radiator and can't see a guide here, so looking for some pointers please.

I can see two fixing bolts at either side at the top and  two clips, but can't see any other fixing bolts.  Are there more at the bottom of the rad? and where are they please?

Does the fan come out with the rad or do I take that out first?

Also on the drivers side is a metal pipe bolted to the rad which I assume is the ATF?  Is OK just to unbolt? Is it under pressure or anything? :-?

Lastly on the passenger side behind the rad is what I assume to be an auxiliary water pump, to keep the fluid moving once the engine is turned off.  The problem with this is that it's running all the time... :-/

All pointers and advice gratefully received thanks, this is the biggest job I've attempted so far on this car!! ::) ::)

I recently had my 2.5 V6 radiator out.....
Roughly in order:
Battery disconnect and out.
Drain down using 'red' cock.
Plastic trim/covers (x3) of rad. top.
Remove bolts and metal spring clips from the top of each side of the rad supports.
Top, bottom and aux/vent hoses hoses off.
Induction-ducts/ram-air system disconnect and remove from throttle-body and filter housing (remember how vacuum hoses connect) also remove the secondary air valve bracket and hoses.
Unbolt the auto-transmission cooler lines/banjo unions (catch the 4 copper washers as they fall off) it`s not pressurised with engine off.
Disconnect the rear-of radiator fan`s plug, the 2 thermo switches (top and middle of near-side of rad. tank) and also the anti-percolation water pump cable-plug.

If free of all it`s ties, the radiator 'should' lift vertically up and out of it`s slotted side cheeks (with the rear fan and anti-percolation pump/hose still attached)....There is no need to disturb the aircon system, hoses or radiator.....you may have to tie-back some 'dangly' items (e.g the transmission unions) to keep them clear of the soft aluminium rad matrix surface as you wriggle and lift the rad. c/w with it`s angular rubber side-support blocks upwards.

It`s a knuckle grazing job (esp. getting to the fan and thermo-switch plugs and the drain cock).....take it steady and don`t rush or swing too hard getting things in and out.

Best single thing I should have done was to take digital camera pics of everything, before taking things apart. ;)
