Ok, I had two new tyres and a new bottom arm fitted this morning and decided to go and get the tracking done as shes been pulling and scrubbing tyres. (I will get the full telemetry tracking done later as need to book it).

The guy at my local said straight away that it was out and went down the pit to sort it however no matter how much he tried (with heat as well) he could not get (not sure what they call it) the tracking adjuster loose. He got the outer collar undone and removed but the central piece would not budge and after an hour he gave up and reassembled saying I would need to take it to a garage and have it fully stripped down  (thought I was already at one!)

Is this a usual occurance???.....as I had the tracking done last september and they also had to free it off then using serious heat and swinging on the wrench.  :-/

Yes, its very usual.  Helps if whoever is doing it puts on grease or anti-rust spray to stop it happening next time, but "professional" mechanics rarely do!

Do you mean the adjustment tube?
Connects the (outer) tie-rod to the (inner) ball-joint?

Every time I have had a new track rod end or had the tracking adjusted I have been told how much trouble it was to free it off first Never have I been told that they reassembled it with copper grease afterwards

funny isn't it, yet they'll happily smear copper grease  all over brake pads as anti squeel.

This track rod issue often leeds to steering wheel repositioning to bodge it "straight".

ie set the steering so the seized rod toe is correct, match the other side toe to it, and remove the steering wheel to re centre. None of this is any good for the steering box as it should be centred.

Dont let them do it.

Exactly - the steering box's travel should itself be centralised when the road wheels are in the 'straight ahead' position.

If this is not done, you can arrive at a situation whereby you'll have a poor lock in one direction.
