Compression/power probs? Engine light fluttering
« on: 23 March 2010, 08:18:13 »

Morning all,

Got a bad noise out of the barge (2000 3L MV6 Elite Auto) when firing it up last night, like a knocking sound, and pushing the accel pedal didn't give me a convincing roar as per usual. You could tell there was something amiss.

Last Thursday, the water pump broke, knocking the fan belt off and over-heating, prompting an AA tow to my mates garage. Picked the car up on Friday and it ran sweetly, no problem. Did about 50 miles in it yesterday, before getting home, then a couple of hours later fired the car up again, that's when the noise started.

Popped the bonnet, but it was v.dark and couldn't see anything wrong.

Tried again this morning, nothing visibly out of order (hey, I'm not mechanical at all!) but still the same problem.

Car starts ok, idles ok but with the slight tocking/knocking sound - actually, it's more like a cat purring after a heavy night on the whiskey, no warnings on the screen and just the engine light illuminated, but not solid, sort of fluttering between half on and full strength.

I've driven it round the block, and while it moves, it doesn't feel like I'm running at full strength. Seems to rev high but not produce as much power?

Is it advisable to drive at the moment, as in, head over to my mates garage (7 miles) and if it conks out, use the AA again, or am I likely to cause massive damage?

Any pointers, advice or egg-sucking lessons appreciated.

This is going to sound very lame, but after half an hour of checking and double checking I've got the right pin-outs, I can't get any readings to flash. Pin 4 & 6 (right hand side, pin 1 at the top), paper clip in, display doesn't change.

Mechanic says "a pipe has probably fallen off" after removing so much to get to the water pump.

Will preserver and try again!

hmm, according to here - http://www.vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk/showthread.php?87821-Omega-FAQs.-Please-check-first.

Please note: After 1999 the chipsets were altered so it was no longer possible to flash the codes out this way.

So, maybe I can't flash the codes in a 2000 model?

Incorrect inofrmation on the Omega.

My money, given the symptoms is that you will get an error code against knock sensor number one, then when you investigate will discover that during the water pump replacement, the knock sensor wire will have been in-correctly routed and then got caught in the aux belt....or it got lunched when the aux belt went (unlikely as its well out the way really)
.

So, look to the left of the water pump for a damaged wire.

Certainly asists !!!

12 - Normal - start of sequence
73 -  Mass Air Flow Sensor Voltage Low
74 - Mass Air Flow Sensor Voltage High
94   Hall Sensor Voltage High

73/74 .. check the MAF is plugged in properly .. if it is .. unplug it and see if the car runs better

Low voltage usually means not plugged in .. high voltage meams an internal fault !! If the car runs better with it unplugged you need a new MAF

94 - Hall sensors are, I think, Crank sensor and Cam sensor  .. don't know to which this refers .. :(

HTH

EDIT : Or what Mark said just above your post ??? Knock sensor ?? Is that a Hall sensor ??

Hall sensor is the cam sensor IIRC. I would check it has not been left unplugged. :y

Worth checking the knock sensor wiring as well as I believe they share a supply, and a trapped knock sensor wire is a distinct possibility, as said.

MAF codes may well be consequential but it will have been removed for access so check that it has been plugged back in.
