I would imagine the dealer has a bulk supply of a single oil that meets or exceeds the requirements of all models serviced. Since later petrol cars specify 5w30 and it exceeds the requirements of the earlier cars that's what they standardise on.

After trawling through the net and noticing my car is not running as smoothly since its oil change (used 5w 30 throughout its life and changed to 10w 40 in recent service), it seems the that oil largely recommended for the 2.2 dti engine is 5w 40.  Still not clear to me why vauxhall have been servicing the car using 5w 30 when it is not even identified on their oil selection chart:

Vauxhall only sell

20/50 Mineral oil
10/40 Semi
5/30 Synth

Vauxhall recommend synth so as to extend the service interval. This is marketing ploys, moreso on a diesel.

Any particular reason why the vauxhall dealer services my car has received since 2003, have used 5w 30 oil if the 10w 40 is better suited?

Its bothering me.

Becasue that is the vx recommended oil.....but, its ok to use the 10W 40 seni synth and change it more often.

My V6 for isntance has an oil change every 5K miles....using 5W30 oil

Original post was re a 2.2 diseasal  :)

Yes, and the Vx recommendation is to use the 5W30 fully synth in the 2.2Dti.....the handbook will probably say 5W40 fully synth but, that was superseeded some years ago by the 5W30
