2.5td won't start
« on: 15 April 2010, 17:39:30 »

After replacing the alternator, i was eager to put things back together and see if I could see voltage.  Put everything back except the viscose fan.  Started the car, no problems, replacement alternator was working well.

Left the car running decided to wash car and engine bay whilst at it with a pressure washer.  No problems still running.  Noticed the temp creeping up but the two elctric fans didn't seem to be running and the temp needle was flicking up and down at just above 90C.  So I thought i better turn it off since the electric fans didn't seem to be running and i hadn't installed the viscose one yet.

Installed the fan, tried to start but i just heard a click and that was it, the glow plugs cycle properly, all the lights on the dash come on and then go off except handbrake but when i try to crank it there is nothing, no relay clicking, no motor cranking.

Now have i managed to get water into some sensor, or has it over heated or near over heated and tripped some safety mechanism that needs to be reset before it will crank over?

cheers

Hmm......
Seems like it's got water in there somewhere.

If I do a job I like to sort of get things running again, as normal then go onto the next job.
That way you know you've not missed anything if you have a problem, easier to trace back.

Let it all dry out, put fan back and take it from there!
see how it goes :y

It was running after the alternator replacement.  I drove it a few yards.  Then came the engine bay wash with jet whilst engine was running and it continued to run.  I only turned it off when i noticed the temp creeping up and reached 90 and the needle was hovering above, flickering as if the the resistance was fluctuating, this is where i think it might have been water in the temp sensor.

Put the viscose fan back in, then tried to restart but absolutely nothing except lights on the dash.

Have read error codes now: (49 Glow Device General Error) ,(92 Cruise Control Device Circuit Open Or Voltage High), I don't think either one applies, oddly enough 92 is cruise control but its a gls model that doesn't have cruise.

If it doesn't have cruise then that's why you have 92, ignore it. 49, check for wet wiring on the glow relay and check the big fuses in the battery tray fuse box as a start.

Let is dry out over night and a few hours in the morning.  But same response.  Got a friend to tow me and it started that way, ran it for about an hour on idle in the hope that everyhting would dry out.  No fuses seem to be blown.

Turned off after an hour, it was thoroughly warm.  But refused to crank over, same as before, the lights come on, the glow plugs cycle, but no stater motor kick it over.  Not even the click of a relay.

What's the battery like?

If you've had problems with the alternator could be discharged.

I've had a couple of batteries go dead on me (not on the TD) even though they seem to run the electrical stuff, they wouldn't turn the starter over. :y

yep, becuase I did something that is arguably stupid to test the motor in an unorthadox way.  When the engine was running after tow starting, I deliberately cranked it just for a split second and it did indeed engage the motor and I heard the grating sound of the teeth.  So it seems to be working, but it won't crank over when the engine is not running.

Could it be the solonoid on the starter is working and not the motor itself?

Missed this msg, the battery is in tip top condition, I took it out whilst replacing the alternator and charged it for a good ten hours, it took some healty charge and then stayed on trickle.  Battery was reading around 13.2 volts before i put it back in, and as i said when i started it yesterday before the viscose fan and pressure wash of engine bay, there were no problems, it fired up with no issues.

you see if the battery is not so good and it doesnt turn the starter over, you should still hear a click from the relay but i don't get that either.

Try putting a direct earth from the battery to the engine block with a jump lead and see if it starts :y
