I'd guess that driving style will also have an effect on likelihood of trouble.  I'm no bearing expert, but surely the faster a bearing is rotating, the faster it 'wears out', as it will get/run hotter.  Red line it all the time and you're surely more in danger of a premature failure than if you drive it like an oldie?

Dunno, just wondrin'.  :)

Put it this way mate...if your tensioner failed at 78k you would certainly be beating yourself up that you didnt stick to the 40k as you sat there with your scrap engined car! :) 40k is a good safe interval to change it and not to be messed with...leave it longer at your risk and quite often at your peril...

Absolutely agree.  The problem is that I cannot trust the 80k statement in the 2003 service book unless I am sure that there has not been a service update bulletin or somebody can confirm that they improved the design in the last Omegas of 2003.  I'm sure that driving style must have an impact too.  Pity!   :(

That's the whole point! GM didn't trust the 80K interval after so many tensioner failures they lowered it back to 40K.

There wasn't any 'improvement to design' of the kit as such, just three different backplate designs and the replacement of a lower tensioner with an idler IIRC. Point is, whatever the Omega petrol engine, change the whole cambelt kit every 40K.

The dealer notification was sent via TIS, point is that if anyone who works for a VX dealership (including the service manager) does not know the intervals I wouldn't trust them to polish a pair of shoes.

dont know how else to put it, 80k means nothing to any petrol omega, ignore it. But if you want to bang your head against a brick wall full of bent valves, carry on.
