Opinions Please!!
« on: 21 May 2010, 08:37:16 »

My 1998  2.5 auto tractors  gear box will happily take me to and from work 26 mile round trip no worries, however if i drive then into city centre, within 20 mins of driving  it wont change up etc   and autobox flashes up limp home mode etc,  auto fluid was drained 2 weeks ago, if anything its worse since replacement.  I like the car  and have spent a few quid ( for a scotsman) on it to keep it running , Is this worth replacing ?   If so does anyone know what kind of money is involved in getting done  as too big for me.

My local mechanic looked at me as if i had 2 heads when i mentioned the 3.0 box conversion.

thanks

sounds like you need a better mechanic.

ar25 box on yours is said to be border line for that engine, imo stick a wanted ad in the test zone asking for an ar35 box andmask Jimbob to move it to the parts section, then you'll need to find an auto specialist, or mechanic with autobox fitting experience to fit it to the car. Then you can chip the ecu for more power and better economy as the ar35 will take the extra torque. hth

it is easy to change the box the only snag is ramps are a must.
to swap ar25 for a ar35 you need donnor t/c and swap bell housing from your g/box to new one.
Oh and you get a atf bath for extra measure your mechanic probably has never done this before.
its around a 7 hour job with scrapped knuckles and swearing
the cost off the ar35 can vary from £50-£150.
it seems strange the box works when on distance work but in city-c it wont change oil might be overheating :-/

Hi Phil

You say you drained the auto fluid, but did you refill correctly, that is with the car level and the ENGINE RUNNING and after selecting all the gears.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

we have put ar35s in place of ar25s and the bell housings have been the same.

have also put an ar30 into a 3.2 with no changes, just the ancilleries and cat 02 sensor hanging brackets that needed changing over.

have also put a 3.2i ar35 into a 2.2i all we did was change the prop donut on the end.

make sure you run the car thru all the gears then top up to the level.

sounds like you might have a selector switch fault, but, sometimes it is the box. try the cheapest first if you arent sure.

shame your 550 miles away else you could "swing by"

Would/does it make any difference just leaving the selector in 3rd  or using 2nd and rd depending on speed, just wondering if it would stop it going into limp mode.  just a thought.
