Emission control pump
« on: 14 June 2010, 12:08:45 »

Hi guys
Has anyone tryed to repair the emission pump, the one under the front bumper which sounds like a hoover when you start up.
Mines been noisey for some time just would like to know more about the internals, i know it helps the cats to warm up quicker so aids fuel consumption, ok some say disconnect it but is this not needed and what affect would this do long term.  :) :)

It doesn't make any difference to fuel consumption, only to exhaust emissions for the first minute or two of running. Just disconnect it. There will be no ill effects whatsoever.

If you really want a working, quiet one, I have one in the garage for a tenner....

...but I wouldn't bother if I was you...

engines require an over-rich mixture when they're warming up to compensate for the fuel not vapourising properly. When they're emissions-tested, sometimes this rich mixture is enough to cause a test fail ( the test is done from stone-cold )

the way around this ( and manufacturers don't like doing it because it's expensive ) is to fit a "secondary air-injection pump". This injects air ( it's just an air pump ) directly into the exhaust manifolds, and the air reacts with the unburnt fuel in a fashion similar to burning. The result is cleaner emissions from cold.

For an owner, there are no requirements to measure emissions from cold, so the secondary air-inject system is of no relevance. It's certainly not part of the MOT test in Britain.

So, unless you're ethically attached to the EU drive-cycle test, you're carrying 10 kilos of junk around with you.

there's no chance of that, I have 3 V8s and they're as follows :-

Holden has no gearbox in it
Bentley has no suspension on it

Discovery would take far too long to get there - it's 360 miles one-way

he's going to have to make do with (probably) the 944 this time

mind you, I could probably ring him with a soundtrack from a Warrior this week - and that's V8
