Rear wheel camber / alignment (+susp query)
« on: 01 July 2010, 15:29:25 »

Being new to RWD in general for this driver I have a question!

First of all local tyre centre couldn't track the car due to excessive wear of front steering components, So I replaced the offending items.

But looking at the rear... the OSR wheel is wearing on the inner edge the other side isn't is this a common problem? I'm assuming a bush of some sort needing replacing?

Going to take it to a 4 wheel alignment centre when I've chased these bits up - but it needs tyres, so am eager to get the OK from you chaps before I go wasting money on bits I don't need!

Incidentally, looking for a set of early MV6 wheels for it and opinions on suspension. I want to keep some of the ride quality but it really could be a fair bit lower. I need to state that I have lowered hard cars, my MK'2s.. so this is meant to be my comfy barge.. but is there a kit with a slight drop that keeps things comfy'ish?!

Being fairly new to Omegas my self I couldn't comment on which of the bushes are common wear items, however if you jack up and support the rear then give the rear wheels/drivetrain a good shake to see if you can identify any excess play. Use a long pry bar to gently lever suspension arms at there mountings, also check them for impact damage and straightness. Also check for any play in the wheel bearings.
The uneven tyre wear may just be down to alignment issues if you find no obvious problems with the bushes.

I have a set of pre-face lift Mv6 alloys, they have nearly new rubber but could do with a re-furb due to light kerbing.

only real common failure at the back is the rear donut bushes. Thats not say you shouldn't check as described for wheel barings and play etc.

Generally speaking, at the back, check donut bushes for seperation of the rubber from the bushes internal metal cup. See the, rather long winded, guide in maintenance.  ::)

Replace bushes if needed, set up as you describe, may have a siezed rear track rod adjuster so plusgas them daily, it may help, then, and only then replace the tyres.

Note the rear is not adjustable directly for camber, however adjusting the rear toe does affect camber. If somebody wants to explane that whole rear end thing to me then i'm all ears.... :-/
