Are these any good

The FAQ says not suitable for broadband ... so I guess not  :(

A set similar to these come with the BT Vision to save folks having to have their Hub next to their television...  they're supposed to be quite good..  my Vision came prior to the inclusion in the kit or you could have mine...

As you know they enable the mains circuit of the house to carry the broadband signal..  went to a blokes house who was using a set for his PC.. it was running quite quickly...  

Try searching e-bay under BT Vision.. some might pop up on the cheap as they're often not needed from the self install kit..

Are the new ones encrypted properly - the old ones were easy to 'get in to' from next door.

BT are getting a dreadful reputation for (lack of) security on their products, such as Homehub :(

Ah I was chatting to the Head IT guy at work about this and he said that they are ok the LAN over electric house cables, As there is a system that is being setup and tested at the mo for people who are in the country or away from built up areas where it would be far to expencive to lay a broadband cable for say just one farm house, and the idea is to run a broadband signal over the high voltage electric cables.

He said the only downfall about it was that it would be like a huge WAN so they would have to lock the connections down alittle like they do with a WEP Key, It was intresting Stuff

It doesnt work that well over long cables (lots of L and some C) and performance differs in the home dependent on whats plugged in.

Thats manily due to the noise filters used in switch mode supplies to stop conducted emissions......

I'm Cat 5e'd anyway, but for those occasions where I haven't a wired connection, I use a cheap wireless bridge...

Can't really comment, but, as these things plug into a Hub's RJ45 I'd assume that any such security level on the Hub should suffice.  Needs to be the max that it'll handle though, probably more secure than WPAII with PSK I believe..  
They are encrypted, think they're 128 bit... and multi chanelled..

Noticed that the Hub password access system has now changed too... you need to enter the serial number of the Hub and to allocate a fresh password to sync with that serial number...  seems like they're addressing security issues after all the doubt in the past.. :y
