EML not on !
« on: 28 July 2010, 11:26:09 »

A funny thing happened last night....

I've got this car that I've been working on, amongst other things, the transmission has been replaced, but it's had engine work, too.

I started it last night and had it running for an hour or two, with downpipes only and no exhaust.

Now, despite it not having either lambda sensor fitted, the EML didn't come on - does anyone have experience of this ?

best I can come up with is that either :-

lambda sensing isn't part of the set-up routing for a period of time ( unlikely )

or lambda sensor isn't part of the set-up routine for a certain distance

or EML is overriden for a certain distance.

N.B. EML does work at start-up, so bulb isn't blown.

I suspect if it was just idling the ECU might not necessarily require the lambda sensors to "wake up". They do tend to be lazy at idle, although if in good condition a heated lambda sensor should work. I suspect it might require a period of running under load before it gets too fussy perhaps? Just a guess though. :-/

There's no monitoring of the Lambda heater circuits on the older M2.8.1 V6  engine management system. The later systems would probably pick up a break in the heater circuit straight away.
