ABS is always on
« on: 28 July 2010, 08:25:37 »

Hi/

It appears that my abs is always on when I brake. I would assume this is down to a faulty sensor. Is it possible to remove each sensor and test i.e drive up the road to see which one is at fault? Or is there another way

Thanks,
Jamie

Hi Jamie
What symptoms do you have and what age is the car.  Is the ABS light on?

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Sounds more likely to be warped discs.

I'm pretty sure that due to the way ABS systems have to be fail-safe, this is actually impossible.  "Safe" in this context  meaning "Does nothing to interfere with the normal braking system"
So if there is any fault detected by its 'selfchecking' it simply does nothing, as if it weren't fitted at all.

So i have three options abs faulty, wishbone bushes or discs.

I assume then that i can take the sensors out and the abs (if it is this) would not judder, as its not sensing. With the wishbone i would thought this would happen all the time? I will check the discs but it seems strange that it can happen straight away, like flicking a switch i thought you might see some deterioration

Does the ABS light come on with the ignition, and then go out again?
If so I think you can rule out ABS problems.

There's a fuse to the abs in the fusebox. Pull it out and abs is of. Then you can se if the problem is still there.

also, if ABS is running (i.e. modulating), you'll be able to hear the recirculation pump running.
