In an earlier post I asked what needed disconnection if MIG welding on the car is it just the alternator or are more disconnections  needed

Alternator? Usually it's the battery that is disconnected.
Saying that though I have a friend who always welds with the battery still connected, he has never had any problems, but I wouldn't recommend this!

Always disconnect negative side of the battery as it just depends on where the alternator rotor has stopped you may be unlucky and it will damage the rectifyer if in the wrong place.

Back in the day I used to disconnect alternator (to protect it) and battery (reduce fire risk).
I'd have thought that all the many electronic systems in modern cars must be very vulnerable but I haven't heard of any problems but if in doubt disconnect, only a few moments extra time vs the time and hassle of repairs.

And watch out for carpets....welding away one day blissfully unaware that the interior of the car was an inferno....

The guy who welded my exhaust last week just put a surge protector across the battery, nothing disconnected.
