Strange noise from rear of car, completely baffled
« on: 04 September 2010, 09:18:55 »

Has anyone got any ideas,
have posted about this 1 previously.
when car is moving at any speed i get a strange noise from the rear. the only way to describe this noise is that of when you were a kid riding your push bike with a lollypop stick clicking on your wheels.
ive had it looked at by a mechanic i use but to no avail.
at first we thought it may have been the wheel bearings but there is no play in the wheels at all and that sound is more of a whinning 1 with them. we then thought it may of been the brakes as they were quite badly worn but have had new discs and pads put on the rear so that has ruled out that 1. there doesnt apear to be anything loose or wearing under the rear of the car. the exhaust is secure.
this noise somehow goes when the car is accelerating, but as soon as you let off the pedal or stick it in cruise then the noise comes back. the drive of the car is not affected in anyway so surely it cant be anything major but its now really buggin me.
anyone had or have the same problem?
can you shed any light on this ongoing problem?
Cheers all  :-?

could be a dry driveshaft or  propshaft joint, maybe worth re-greasing drive shaft joints one at a time and see if the noise dissapears

Have you considered the drive train, i.e. propshaft or diff?

Is there any damage to the heat shields above the silencers or to the plastic wheel arch liners?

Depending on how the wind catches them they can move about in a demented fashion if they are not securely fixed.

I spent weeks trying to find the cause of an irritating rattle on SWMBOs Golf and eventually stopped it by improvising some extra fixings to replace the chewed up ones on a wheel arch liner.
