Noisy starter motor
« on: 28 September 2010, 09:15:03 »

I've noticed it seems to be making a metallic noise of late, like somethings rubbing when the starter motor engages, will have a look when I get a chance, anything I should be looking for? Never even looked in that area before tbh... :-/

It's something I've heard on other cars before and thought "ooh, that doesn't sound right"

Your not having much luck with this one. All i can say is sort it sooner rather than later.

The Starter on the Nova had been making a funny sound for a while until one Saturday moring outside Tesco the starter sezied, good job we were on a hill.

Most of the time you can get a starter re-coned for alot less that a new one but you  might be without the car for a day or so

Cheers

Could be those reduction gears getting a bit graunchy, I suppose?

Then again, I was standing next to your car when you started it on Sunday and don't remember hearing anything out of the ordinary.

I was still half cut from the night before though.

You should NEVER abrade a comm......the most you can do at home is polish it up with a bit of Brasso.

It should go on a laith, the trouble with sanding is that it results in a com that is slightly out of round and that does not have perfect edges to the segments (only small but it makes a difference).

This risks the segments raising and causes premature brush failure.  :y

If you have to replace it and go for an exchange alot of factors will supply you with a unit(some charge a deposit) then you can just replace the one on the car minimising the time the car is off the road and return the fubard one to the factors later.
