Hi all
Took car for test today man found offside rear spring broke and failed it i was gobsmacked as it was only serviced a fortnight ago anyway bloke said you need to replace both. He rung around said could get them 50 each and 50 to fit them but i said just fit me the broken one as they look pretty new in fact when i bought the car  3 years ago they had just been replaced by previous owner. He did say they need replacing in pairs but he will change just the one, my question is he shooting me a line as other looks ok  i dont want to pay if not needed

If the spring is broken then it is an MOT fail. Ideally they should be replaced in pairs as they will age with use, if he fits just the one you may notice a slight lean down towards the unchanged side.

I will add he is ripping you off, I'd fit a pair and you'd still have change out of a ton!

but he said being as they self leveling its a different spring but in same token im not sure if the ones on are genuine he said they wasnt

Springs are quite different for self-leveling - non-self-leveling... IIRC the self levellers are a good deal "softer"

All work on suspension & brakes should be done in pairs. As Lee says, you introduce an imbalance between the original worn item & the new part.

Self levelling springs are different. And given the nightmare they are to fit you should have bitten his hand off for £100 all-in. Another reason you should get them done in pairs is you have no idea if the correct springs are currently on the car (like if Welung666 fit them for example  ). Change one and you could well have different rate springs left and right - not good.

At £100 for parts, they are obviously pattern springs, and still a good price for self levelling springs.

Yeah.. £200 a pair for saloon springs and £170 for estate springs with the self levelling even at trade club prices

Thanks for all your input ive decided to replace the pair he said it wouldnt be much more for labour if he was doing both sides
