Clutch life on 2.5 v6 Auto
« on: 21 October 2010, 15:17:54 »

What is the normal life of a clutch on an omega?( mixture of town and motorway driving). I take it that will slip like any manual gearbox when their on their way out. Only asking as my mig is 10 years old in december but has low miles so assume 75% of driving was previously done locally. :y

Automatic gearboxes don't have clutches in the same sense that a manual transmission does. It's the torque converter that takes up the drive when you pull away so the clutches that are present in the gearbox (to select the gear ratios) don't wear anything like as much.

If the gearbox is cared for it should last the life of the car - or at least 200,000 miles or so.

They do need fluid changes to last that long, though, despite GM's declaration that they are "sealed for life". New fluid about every 60-80k tends to be the recommendation here.

i see. Should the fluid be changed on a yearly basis if you have only done low miles, ie every 80k or 8 years? cheers kevin :y

Don't forget to ensure a new filter is changed as well as the mandatory sump gaskets when changing the gearbox oil:-)  (Dexron III specification for Oil)
