Painting trim
« on: 26 October 2010, 12:52:34 »

My silver pre-F/L MV6 came with black trim which a previous owner had painted silver (and not particularly well, to be honest) which is now peeling off in places.
I want to re-paint the trim (cos I don't like the black).
Is it just a matter of masking off, priming and painting?
Is there any sort of paints I should be avoiding - such as cellulose-based?
Or would I be better off sourcing some silver trim? Is there such a thing for pre-f'l omegas? Where could I get it?

Estate btw.

I did this on my previous Mig and it worked quite well.

Ideally you need to get the remaining paint off first but starting a fresh, you need to clean the plastic down with a lot of white spirit first. Undercoat before spraying and laquer if at all possible.

I was advised that it would NOT work too well but I seemed to get away with it. That said, it was 2 years ago so I don't know what state it is in now.

Be aware also, that it costs a fortune in spray paint if you want to do a decent job. Heck knows why but I got through tons of cans.

Get shut of the black trim altogether, find a facelift rear bumper and trim strips in the same colour and whack them on, then colour code the front bumper.

Makes a huge difference to the car !! will link to some pics of mine later on

Nice motor!  Think the bumpers are standard mate, didn't realise it was an estate but the F/lift rear slots onto the saloon so the estate may fit too. It' easy to change the sidestrips to facelift ones and yours will  likely bend/unstick at some point. Keep your eyes peeled in the F/S section for some :y

If you want to spray plastic trim you will need to spray on an adhesion promoter before painting. Or use a paint which has plasticiser in it. ;)
