If i replace the lifters is it worthwhile to change the cam cover gasket / o rings at the same time?

Are the lifters easy to get out and put back in?

TB reckoned at the last oxford meet that i have probably got some lazy lifters and that a good second hand set would be the way to go. However i can get 8 from the vauxhall dealer for £7ish each all in which i didn't think was too bad.
 
Is there an easy way to check which ones are knackered? (Then i could consider just replacing those and not need to buy the full set of 16)

You could always try a bit of wynns lifter treatment mate like i did,seemed to do the trick aswell.

Thanks for the suggestion Mark, but unfortunately I've done that already and it made things a little quieter, but the main thing is on a cold morning the engine makes a loud clatter for the first minute. Any more treatment is not going to make a diff.
P.S. No SAI on a 4-pot

Oh well,worth a try though.You say a loud clatter,woud that really relate to the lifters.I would be prone to say something a bit more serious :-/,but then again i could probably be wrong. ,and hope i am for your sake.

Out of interest what more serious things are you thinking - maybe i can check these and fix/eliminate them?

How about broken exhaust manifold studs? I had this problem on a 2.0 cd model a couple of years back. goes quiet as soon as it got hot as the two metal faces expanded and sealed the gap then when it got cold after parking it up  the rattle was back.... just a thought....

Thanks for suggestion . I would reckon it is not this since the manifold studs snapped make a metallic sound and this is a deeper clatter. I need to video the noise and post up but it has been too warm recently.

I heard the noise that day-ITS lifters alright-Stethoscope on top might pick which one is lazy-Only lasts couple of seconds until oiled up-I got one on my miggie like that-Has been that way for over 2 yrs now-

At the meet it unformtunately did not make the clatter it normally does since the engine had a good 30 minute run.

There is a guide on how to clean and test you lifters in the maintenance section.
I used wynns lifter treatment for 500 miles then did a couple of oil / filter changes over a couple of weeks and job done.
