auto box solonoid

Hi ive been advised that my autobox problem of losing drive in reverse may be a solonoid problem so ive decided before i hunt out a replacment box to check this out ....only problem is i dunno where it/they are :-/ any advice would be much appriciated cheers

Have you checked the fluid level?

Reverse is normally the first to suffer from low fluid.

I think I'm right in saying it's selected manually in that no solenoids are required to select it. Certainly if it drive OK in "D" with all gears selecting as they should there's nothing wrong with the solenoids.

Have you had a gearbox warning on the MID at all?

i would "echo" that, if all forward gears are okay then the solenoids are ok.reverse has a clutch all off its own.

oil change was my first plan of action next weekend when i have the time the previous owner reckons he tried this to no avail but still gonna do it meself due to the fact i only got the car weekend just gone and the crap weather ive not had a chance to really start exploring .
I know the selector lights do not change during the problem but not noticed the gb light on the dash gotta do a tesco run later so shall look out for it and let you know if it comes on

My old 94 td auto slowly lost reverse until it wouldn't go backwards. Auto guy said the linings for reverse were in the sump, caused by water ingress. The breather had fallen off ages  before and i had driven thru a deep puddle on the way to the beach. Solution 2nd hand box! Sorry.

I have known another box lose reverse when water got in. :(

 :( i had a feeling every road i went down would eventualy lead to replacing the box ah well dont suppose anyone knows of a reputable firm/guy that does 2nd hand boxes as i cant post in wanted

none of the clutches are "in the sump".  water is bad news for all the clutches as it is absorbed by the clutch linings,then when things get hot it boils, and breaks the linings away fron there backing plates.losing reverse but none of the other gears can not be blamed on water, however results the same slushbox out :'(
