6 speed boxes are more suited to the modern oil burners as its all there torque is delivered in one big lump, so more gears the better.

True but if you check out the gear ratios of a 6 speed box and compare them to a 5 speed box from an earlier car you will find that the ratios from 1st to 5th are shorter and 6th isnormally about the same as 5th would be on a 5 speeder. This is done because the torque produced by the newer diesel engines is so much greater and through a narrower rev range, with the lower gearing the car accelerates quicker up through the gears instead of loading up a taller gear for longer and thus preventing premature gearbox failure, whereas the older diesels produce slightly less torque through a greater rev range and are quite happy with 5 speeds, until you chip them. Im sure there are many people on here who will tell you of gearbox failure after having their cars chipped, simply because the gearbox cant deal with the extra power. So imo if the cars standard, leave it standard, if its been tuned or modified, then upgrade as stuff breaks. The expense alone of modifying a 6 speed box to fit an omega would rule it out as an option for many people

Very interesting. I am now armed with more ammunition for the people at work who think a 2.0 tdi A6 6 speed FWD, and a Seat Altea of all things 2.0 tdi with superchip is better/faster than my machine!

Depends how the box is ratio'd. My friends gti-6 pug is ratioed to be quick and use the high end of the revs, even in 6th it could use another gear for cruising!

A 'big car' 6 speed like the T56 (found in corvette, monaro, viper, 90's astons etc and I think the lotus carlton) use 6th as like an overdrive, the top speed tends to come from 5th.
