Since Ive had the miggy the traction control and abs lights have randomly come on, occasionally abs will kick in under light braking although not always when the warning light is lit

On a recent motorway trip I had cruise control on... The warning lights appeared, cruise control stopped and I noticed the trip computer said I was doing stupidly low fuel consumption, this also made the steering heavy, any ideas what could be causing this? The previous owner told me the power steering pump needed replacing but for the time being power steering works fine aslong as the car is above idle revs

it would appear that you have the dreaded ABS ECU failure, well documented here. You either need A N Other ECU from the same type of car, or around £130 gets your ECU repaired by the likes of BBA repairs (search eBay & you'll find them)

Fair enough, would it need to be from a manual model? (as I believe manual ones are quite hard to find)

As far as I know .... yes! So it'd be easier to get your repaired then.

I used to champion getting another off the same model. You might pay the seller £50 plus postage.

I don't now. My last one lasted 3 or 4 months before failing. So I now recommend refurb. More money but guaranteed a couple of years. I believe the fault is a very thin wire inside.

I am currently waiting for a quote from an ECU company in Nottingham others have used. More complicated as I am overseas and want themn to fix one of two I will send them.

Another company well patronised by other forum members is BBA Reman in Kent I believe.

There is a good maintenance guide on the forum. Fiddly job requiring patience and a good selection of extn pieces.

No, none at all provided you are aware you have no ABS!

Obviously your insurance would be an issue if a vehicle inspection was carried out following an accident, but who's to say the ABS issue didn't occur in the impact?

You can also drive your car with the ECU removed when its being refurbed.... just tape some padding over the ECU connections (car side) to discourage dirt and grime from getting in.
