Rear Springs
« on: 06 January 2011, 14:18:06 »

The rear of my car seems very low.  The tyre goes up into the wheel arch. I wondered when I bought it whether it had some sort of sport springs fitted to lower the car. As i tow a caravan the low tow bar gives me concern. Is there any way I can check whether the springs are non standard. If I decide to fit new springs should I go for standard or heavy duty if there is such a thing for the Omega. If I change the springs do I have to get the geometry at the back checked? I have thought about the pump up air shockers are these a good way to go? If I use normal springs which make would you recommend?

It could have had a MV6 set up fitted as they are lower. The first thing to do though is have a look at the bottom of the springs quite a common problem is that the bottom couple of coils (pig tails) snap and fall off and dissappear

After checking for any broken ends of your springs, you could consider a couple of things.

KYB do replacement springs. Try BuyPartsby.com  Not big money and fairly easy to fit.

Grayston and Brocott sell "spring assisters" - in simple terms a block of rubber that fits inbetween a coil of your rear springs. Fitting instructions included. About £30 for a pair. I am trying a pair of the latter when they turn up as I do a lot of towing this time of year.

I am guessing you have a Witter towbar. Both my cars have one and around here they are always bottoming out.

Finally self levelling suspension. Great if fitted and working. As a retrofit it is quite a lot of work. I would suggest staying clear of that.

Thanks Varche  I would be interested to know how the assisters go. What sort of clearance do you have in your wheel arch and what is your tow bar  centre height without caravan .Yes I have a Witter

You are asking the wrong man! Both my cars are Elite models supposedly with self levelling shock absorbers.

As things stand now both have duff self levelling shockers until my std Bilstein B4' s arrive. The Elites have softer springs so the minute you have any weight on the drawbar with duff shockers you are LOW.

Maybe someone else with a similar car will help with measurements

Some time ago I asked my local car factor if you can get heavy duty springs for towing which you can.
The springs are the same only the diameter of the coil is bigger.
They came in a £56.00 a pair :y
