safe mode

Can anyone shed light on what is safe mode (not computer related) :-? :-? :-? As I saw as part of discription to mig. ::)

Safe mode or Limp home mode, occurs when the ECU detects a fault and limits the power output of the engine so as to prevent any damage/further damage.
IIRC rpm is limited to 4k.

safe mode is for the radio, ie if you remove power it then asks for a code when refitted

I could be and probably am wrong, but as far as the gearbox is concerned i thought limp home mode/safe mode does the same as snow mode - locks in third

Yup, that too. The handbook refers to it as 'Emergency Running Program' .

It was being used in context with blown cylinder head gasket.
What is the final upshot with this problem and how far can it be driven in this state?

I don't think you should drive it at all. Have you confirmed it is the HG as a lot of migs are mis-diagnosed.

Absolutely assuming diagnosis of HG failure, this needs to be sorted asap...the car is unlikely to start and run anyway.....
