I think that the car stopped due to empty tank. Tried to start it several times with no luck. Added 5 litres of fuel and nothing. Checked the plugs, no oil or water in the wells. Added another 5 litres of fule and voilá, it runs. But the EML is on (the one with the engine symbol). Codes are 0300, 0301, 0302, 0303 and 0304.

Why only four of the pots? Why on both banks? Does the EML cure after 10 fresh/fault-free starts?

How much fuel does it need to get started? Fuel lines would not take more than two litres? and, even with very empty tank 5 l should be enough, I think?

Strange that it needed 10 litres fuel. However, now it's running well again... despite the eml...

just doine a quick search would appear to lead me to believe that P0300 is random missfires detected and P0301,2,3 & 4 is indicating a misfire on cylinder 1,2,3 & 4...  have a look at this post and see if it helps you... it suggests looking at the HT leads / coil pack in the dark to see if you can find any sparks showing if/where a short might be occuring that is leading to the error codes.

On the fuel side, the Estates or Caravans as you say aren't very forgiving with near empty tanks unlike the saloons they have a flatter tank layout, when parked up on a slope with low fuel they will struggle to suck fuel through on a restart.

You also stand the risk of sucking up any crap thats at the bottom of the tank, think I it was me I would be filling the tank up and go for an Italian tune up.

If it was the coil packs I'd expect codes for either 1-3-5 or 2-4-6 bu tnow getting only two cylinders from each bank.

Update. EML is gone, I guess it was the 10 clean starts that did the job. Have not read the codes. All is well, for now 

I still wonder why it took 10 litres of fuel to get it started, it shouldn't, should it?

I've run out of fuel twice now (yes, I know, tw*t!!)
5L can in, started first time on both occasions
