Tell tale burning smell at low speeds, idling
« on: 12 February 2011, 14:42:34 »

OK you Brains of Britain as you've identified all other issues I've had here's your starter for ten for the latest one ;D

Last year after purchasing the car, I had the problem of oil leaking into the spark plug sockets. It was rightly identified and the cam cover gaskets were replaced and, I'm assuming, the crankcase breather system was also cleaned.

However towards the back end of last year I was aware of a burning smell coming from the engine compartment, sometimes accompanied by wisps of smoke as opposed to steam, when running at low speeds.

At the end of the year the fan belt broke and was replaced by a local garage and not the original guy I used. Soon afterwards I noticed the temp gauge moving upwards when engine idling or at very low speeds (traffic queues etc) but perfectly OK at normal running speed or on motorways.

The burning smell is still there and I have had a "Check oil" message which required a top up with a litre of the good stuff. While pouring, I spilt a few drops of oil on to a hot engine casing and it gave off a similar smell to that which I experience when running the engine at low speeds.

So, in your considered opinions are we talking of replacing the cam gasket again as it probably wasnt the "Recommended camcover gasket" or could it be yet another issue to help drain the bank balance ?  :-[

V6 CDX 2.5 litre, Automatic T reg btw

It could very well be cam cover gaskets again if pattern gaskets were used last time.

Yes it could be the cam cover gaskets again it the replacement ones were not genuine Vx, or / and they were not fitted correctly.

However, after saying that, if the gaskets have been leaking for a while there may be still a residue of oil on and around the engine which is being burnt off.  On the Omega's I have changed the cam cover gaskets on the smell of burning / warm oil remained for the next 100 - 200 miles, then disappeared. ;) ;) ;)

As for the heavy use of oil I would check around the engine for other leaks apart from the cam covers.  The latter in my experience leak very small quantities of oil when failing :)

Thanks to both of you. We dont use it a lot as its just the spare for school runs etc so maybe the excess hasnt worn off yet. I'll need to find a decent garage to look it over.

Can anyone recommend an Omega veteran in the Newcastle upon Tyne area ?

firstly check your sparkplug wells for oil, proof that the cam cover seals are leaking, as you say non vx gaskets fitted then these will not last long also it is important that the breather system is cleaned out throughly or it will cause the gaskets to go again (in a short period of time) if all of above is ok then it could be excess oil on the engine  :y
