use the cam belt guide to remove the front cover, then it's just 3 bolts. Assembly is the reverse of dismantling  and you don't need more sealant on the O ring.

If you're nimble fingered you can do it without removing the cover, but - it's fiddly, and you risk dropping a bolt and having to take it off anyway!

Wondering why you would do it that way? as you also risk contaminating the Cambelt with anti freeze/water :-?

But you'll get water on the cambelt around the lower pulley anyway, even if the cover is off?

(That's why I like to do cambelt change at the same time as pump - can drain first, and avoid getting coolant on the new belt)

Not if you remove the Cambelt first you won't. This is why I asked why you would remove the Water Pump without removing the Cambelt Cover? you then go onto say you wouldn't which is rather confussing in my opinion.. :-?

Agreed Daz, although the person's question was how to change the water pump - so, I didn't base my reply on the fact the cambelt would be coming off too.

Sorry for the confusion.

To the OP - you should do as Daz suggests - and remove the cambelt, before taking the pump off.

You'll be looking at needing the setting tools, or a larger garage bill, though.

If you go down the garage route, ensure they have the correct setting kit..

I'm not suggesting that you should run your car with water/coolant running over your cam belt on a continuous basis, but a bit of coolant on the belt when you change your water pump aint going to do it any long term harm. You should see how long a timing belt at work lasts running in tomato sauce!  (but when they break they just break - they don't bend 24 valves but just mangle a skip full of empty cans.    )

thanks for advice guys would like to do timing belts on both cars when it gets warmer so will get hold of lock kit.

I got my cambelt kitand water pump from Buypartsby. Excellent price. When  fitted the water pump I checked it rotated freely and it didn't! The VX bolts were too long for the thinner aftermarket pump body(Quinton Hazel?). Easily solved with some spacers but worth checking as it wasn't jammed.
