Your thoughts please
« on: 01 February 2008, 17:47:19 »

I think that on this forum we are all pretty level headed, so id'e like to ask your opinion on road work filtration lanes.
We've all witnessed the folowing at some point.
When two lanes merge into one at road works, why do some drivers decide to pull into the outside lane to block traffic moving up?
When the signs clearly say "USE BOTH LANES" "MERGE IN TURN"
Does this not simply move the merge point further back & make the queue even longer?
I can see what their trying to achieve by doing this, their making the point ahead where their going to merge easier for them selves & everyone else, but NOT those behind.
Iv'e just seen this very same question posted on the TG web site & Tom blames Truckers for the blocking off of the second lane.
My self a few years back had the same experience but with a car driver so i got outa my car, walked up to his car & ask him to move up as the signs require you to.
By blocking the second lane & not adhering to the signs are the drivers in question braking the law?
Your thoughts please.

Depends on the situation.

Everything (ignoring what Oxfordshire County Council are doing) with roadworks and highway code is to maintain traffic flow.

If it is clearly a merge in turn, yes, obey.

If its a motorway or trunk road, you won't get merge in turn signs - in this case, idiots tearing up to cones then slamming on anchors to get in cause the flow to stop in BOTH lanes, hence should merge in in plenty of time to save the flow stopping.  If you merge in before flow becomes snail pace, it will keep flow going. If you merge at the cones, flow will stop around 10 cars back.  This is why you only get merge in turn generally in urban areas.

And yes, I have a city and guilds in roadworks ;)
