Suspension woes ............
« on: 17 July 2011, 13:36:49 »

Ok, since replacing the rear donuts a couple of months ago there has been a gradual increase of "crash/thump" from the rear suspension.

The car passed its MOT last week - but just how much do they inspect the suspension - particularly the rears?

The effect is caused by anything other than a small bump to the rear nearside. Yesterday I went over a level crossing and it was really quite bad - the whole body seeming to lurch to the right  - if that makes sense?

Any ideas?

Failing shocks can have a strange effect on handling, as can broken springs. A broken pigtail from the base of the spring might not be spotted if it has escaped competely :-/

Also if you have a look at the guide for fitting the rear bushes, it says something about making sure that they are lined up correctly, otherwise they don't absorb any loads correctly, causing the car to steer from the back.

Doubtless someone better informed will be along shortly...

Orientation is important, main body needs to aline with, or point at, the dif. Along the line of the subframe arm. Something I learned the hard way, hence the amendment in the guide.

Also worth checking they are still fully seated, bolts are tight to the correct torque and that the other sub frame bushes rear of the dif are still intact and not separated.  Broken springs and failed shocks are always worth a check though.
