Hi All,
I need to fit a trailer socket to my 2002 3.2 L Estate.
I was nosing around the back end & spare wheel compartment this afternoon to see what / where to pick up wiring.

At the very back of the spare wheel area I found a round socket with flat pins that from the wiring colours looks to be what is needed for connecting. It started to rain so I couldn't check out what there might be on the socket.

Does any one know if in fact this is a connection ready fitted for a trailer socket, and if so, is the mating part of the connector available, or part of a kit available.  Where or VX part

There is a trailer socket in the wiring system, and if the link is removed and a relay fitted then the trailer warning on the dashboard becomes active.

A prewired unit is available from Vx .. but it is

a) darned expensive

b) 13 pin specification

Yep. Sounds like the trailer connector.

You could buy the mating harness from Vauxhall but, as said, it's not cheap. What I did was to chop the required wires at the back of the connector and solder them, then insulate with heat shrink sleeving, to an 8 way cable down to the towing hitch.

The brake light wire in that connector is not live by default. To correct this you need to either add a bulb failure sensor which plugs in behind and to the left of the glove compartment or to bridge two of the pins on the connector for the sensor.

Apparently you can get a new flasher unit and an extra lamp for behind the dash to enable the extra towing indicator light on the dash. I just connected the trailer indicators via a relay with an audible warning.

There's a thread in the ICE / electrical section with all the colour codes of the wires you need to find.. Can't locate it at the moment though :-/

Same car, same problem. All I did was pick up a feed from the passengers side brake light, along with a decent earth from the light cluster housing.

For the indicators I put in an audible warning one which sits in the wheel well right at the back, near the jack If I remember correctly.

I could do some photos tomorrow if wanted..

Wiring inside nearside lamp cluster, used spare piece of multicore, using about 3 cores for the earth back to the socket connections. I've cut into the brake light cable to feed the brake light in trailer socket.




Wiring behind wheel jack, used voltage sensing relay for feed to Fridge and used audible warning connected into indicator circuit.
Note spare crankshaft sensor curled up in cubby hole
